MOBILE SOLUTIONS FOR BIOMEDICAL PRACTICE IN TEACHING AND E-LEARNING

Funded by:

HP Technology for Teaching Grant Initiative

Developed by:

Departement of Computer and Systems, University of Pavia, Italy
Departement of Clinical Engineering, San Matteo Hospital Trust, Pavia, Italy

The University of Pavia and San Matteo Hospital Trust are always in close relationship collaboration. For this reason, a great part of the didactics and teaching courses takes place directly at San Matteo Hospital, as well as many practical applications of teachings in the faculty such as Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Medicine.
The technology strategic plan of the San Matteo Hospital is finalized to the evolution toward a new conception of hospital: filmless, with radiological images shared in digital format, paperless, with digitalized clinical data sheet, and Wireless, with the introduction on large scale of mobile technologies.

Mobile technology represents the future of the modern conception of the Hospital and of the modern vision of university teaching also through e-lessons and laboratory activities from remote, with mobile devices connected to a WLAN, otherwise inaccessible.

The introduction and use of mobile technologies in departments with patient in isolation rooms for immune deficiency conditions, has the objective of allowing a better and improved activity in practical aspects of didactics for bioengineering and medical students.
Medical steps destined to be in this way improved are in large part related to the digital acquisition and elaboration of clinical data from biomedical mobile devices, still only recorded on paper sheet.

Introduction of these technologies will also allow to the patients to be part of the ongoing didactical activity in schools and university, as in the under represented and unlucky minority of young patients coming also from abroad or far from home.

The project is finalized to the introduction of mobile technologies into hospital departments with immunodeficient patients in isolation rooms in oncohematology and pediatric oncohematology.

Main objectives are:

  •
  • Create the opportunity for medicine students, nursing science and for graduating and post-graduated students to attend to the didactic activity, taking part, through mobile technology and video conference services, into the clinical work on patients;
  •
  • Offer to the students of Bioengineer, during their professional stage, the possibility to practice using wireless technologies for the patient management and with their connection with medical equipment;
  •
  • Furnish the department with a technology able to establish a communication between patients and the external world, especially with schools and universities, solving the problem of the lack of space owing to which fixed computers and monitors can't be installed.

Students will attend to the work of filling a digitalized clinical data-sheets appreciating the improvement compared to the simple paper version, learn the steps for purchasing clinical data through medical devices connected with portable computers, evaluate the potentiality of these solutions in the elaboration and storing processes. Secondly, students will learn the practical aspects of the use of supporting biomedical devices, like for Citofluorimeters for the examination of stam cells in post-trasplan
tations and Gamma-Beta Counters.
Students can also attend to clinical and diagnostic activities, despite the isolation measures necessary for these patients through a direct connection to the teacher and physician.

Further aim of the mobile technology project, together with the didactic activity, is to endow the departments of Oncohematology and Pediatric Oncohematology, that are totally isolated from the external environment, with wireless mobile devices connected to the net, allowing patients to get in touch with their families, their schools and their family doctors, especially in the frequent cases of patients arriving from distant regions.
The relationship between student and teacher will become on-line and direct and the endowment of mobile wireless systems connected to the net gives also to University patients-students the opportunity of attending lessons and laboratories as well as being updated on the ongoing didactic activities.

The mobile technology project also makes possible the remote sharing of clinical data directly from degency rooms that up to now has been impossible, being all clinical data registered on paper supports.
Evaluation of the impact on teaching methods and on the improvement of the biomedical processes will be made through graduating works and stages for students.
