Project overview
This project was born from the idea of using mobile wireless technologies to create a link between young immuno-deficient patients, kept in isolation rooms, and the external world. Among other positive fallouts, such a link will both

  • allow patients to easily keep in touch with their school/university.
  • make teaching courses organized in the hospital for those patients much more interactive and effective than today.

A link with restricted areas through mobile technology also allows for other new applications. In particular

  • the teacher can keep in touch with medicine students when he/she is visiting patients in isolation, operating in the clean room, during surgery, and so on.
  • biomedical engineering students can be trained in the telemetric control of and data/signal acquisition from biomedical instrumentation placed in those areas.

Impact on Student Learning - Today, training of both medicine and biomedical engineering students in the clinical setting suffers from limitations in restricted areas (laboratories, isolation rooms, operating theater, etc.). Conversely, young immuno-deficient patients in isolation have limited or no access to their school/university courses. Wireless mobile technology can bridge these gaps and link restricted medical areas with the external world.
Wireless access to restricted areas/situations for teaching/training purposes is expected to impact on learning by increasing the educational opportunities offered to the students.

Impact measure will consider the new laboratory experiences, stages, learning opportunities, etc., made possible by wireless technology and Tablet PC. A second important impact is expected on student’s attitude toward these technologies and their use, and will be evaluated by means of questionnaires administered at different times throughout the class period.
