Project Updates
The project was started on September 2007, when 20 Tablet PC (HP Compaq tc4400) complete with the relevant HW accessories and SW have been delivered by HP to the University of Pavia, Dept. of Computer and Systems, to be used in the clinics of the Hospital San Matteo.
At present the Hospital San Matteo WLAN has limited extension because
In particular, at present the WLAN doesnt reach most of the restricted areas where the more interesting project related activities are planned.
Then, the first phase of the project has been mainly concerned with two items:
Moreover informational and operational meetings have been organized with teachers (in particular from the faculty of medicine) and other professionals involved in the project.
Wireless connection
In the areas to be used by the project where no WLAN connection is available, we are installing low power wireless access points (hubs) to the wired net. Low power helps to minimize electromagnetic fields exposure. To the same purpose, hubs are switched on only when in use. The hubs placement is not always easy because it requires a tradeoff between the technical constraints imposed by the existing wired LAN, the space limitations typical of any restricted area, and the needs of the medical activity.
HW and SW testing and development.
Various HW and SW tools are being tested.
Hardware Besides the installation of the above WLAN, we are testing different WebCams for their possible use for video connection by Tablet PCs.
WebCams are to be used when the Tablet PC is being used as a mobile device, then they must be small and lightweight enough for this use, and provided with a stable enough support and suitable for fixation to the Tablet PC even when it is folded in Tablet configuration.
Software Several teachers have been trained in the use of MS Windows Journal (or alternatively MS One Note ) during their classes.
Group Scribbles and Classroom Presenter are being tested for their possible use for cooperative teaching.
Camtasia Studio has been recently made available by TechSmith Co. and will be tested for its possible use as teaching facility and support.
The integration of DICOM viewers for access to digital medical imaging systems will also be explored, as well as that of typical tools/solutions for inter-PC communication, such as instant messengers, VoIP on WLAN, and video-conference tools.
At present the Hospital San Matteo WLAN has limited extension because
- an optic fiber LAN is available that ensures the necessary intra-net connection between all the hospital structures and the access to the Internet
- the presence of EMFs is particularly critical in the healthcare environment and its introduction requires extreme care.
In particular, at present the WLAN doesnt reach most of the restricted areas where the more interesting project related activities are planned.
Then, the first phase of the project has been mainly concerned with two items:
- arranging adequate wireless connections in the above restricted areas
- testing HW and SW tools to be used for project development.
Moreover informational and operational meetings have been organized with teachers (in particular from the faculty of medicine) and other professionals involved in the project.
